While this mentality will remain steadfast for some time, it appears that a longstanding gaming franchise is about to be made a reality through Nickelodeon. Speaking on the Nick Animation Podcast, Fred Seibert of Frederation Studios (known for The Fairly Odd Parents and Adventure Time) confirmed that a gaming-related project that the team has been sitting on for 12 years is finally underway. Speculation at this point seems to be directed at Nintendo being the IP holder that’s green-lit a show based on one of its many properties. If true, this could be anything from a revamped Super Mario Bros. Super Show to another crack at The Legend of Zelda – presumably sans the obnoxious and notorious “excuse me, princess” line – but this is all just speculation. With that said, given Nintendo’s recent initiative to start partnering with companies for film and television, it does make a lot of sense.
As Seibert stated, the project “needs to go unnamed” for the time being, but gaming aficionados will certainly be eager to see what Frederation Studios has up its sleeve. Whether or not it’s a Nintendo cartoon is an interesting prospect, but with previous reports pointing to Netflix setting up a Legend of Zelda live-action series (which, sadly, never ended up coming to fruition) it’s possible that the series has found a new home on Nickelodeon.
It’s interesting to speculate on the matter, so feel free to chime in with thoughts on Nickelodeon’s perspective take on a gaming cartoon below.
