Rather than auto-save or saving through the main menu, the game is saved manually through Access Points, which players will need to discover in order to use fast travel. The method is old school, and It’s important to know how it works since it is beneficial to have multiple saves in a complex game like this one.

How To Save
In order to save for the first time, the opening mission must be completed. This can take up to an hour and requires defeating the Goliath boss. Once this prologue is done, approach the black terminals in the moon base to unlock the manual save. The moon base is also the one spot where saving is possible through the menu screen. In other locations, players must typically save manually.
It will require a bit of a hunt in the open world to find Access Points. These Access Points look like old rusted snack machines and are often guarded by hostile robots. Once these enemies have been taken care of, the Access Terminal can be unlocked and used to save, get map data, read emails, and fast travel to other Access Points.
Access Points can be found in most zones throughout the map. Must-get Access Points are in the settlements, such as the Resistance Camp and Robot Village. Being able to save in those areas is very convenient, as many quests take place there. Also, whenever there is a Saving Possible message in the right upper corner of the screen, then that means the game can be saved via the menu rather than by Access Point.
Quick Save Versus Regular Save
Access Points give players two save options. First, there is the regular saving of the game, which is accessed from the save menu. Secondly, there is a quick save, which does not bring up the save menu.
While some games use separate files for quick saves and regular saves, Nier: Automata’s quick saves will overwrite the most recently used save slot. Be sure to keep this in mind when using the quick save feature. For those with multiple save slots, notably for those trying to get every ending, regular saving is a safer method than quick saving.
