Their task is far from easy, but it becomes increasingly more difficult the further they progress. Enemies lurk behind every corner and must all be vanquished if the two protagonists wish to fulfill their roles, leaving little room for error. Androids are said to be nothing more than emotionless husks created in humanity’s image, but this doesn’t stop them from mimicking human behavior both in and out of battle. Taunting an enemy during battle is one of the most humanistic traits displayed throughout all of NieR: Automata, but not everyone knows how to do it.

How To Taunt

The option to taunt enemies in NieR: Automata becomes available quite early in the game, but the way to activate the ability isn’t explained until much later. A2 can readily taunt her enemies once she becomes playable, but 2B and 9S will need to discover a different means of mocking their foes. Though there are two ways to taunt in NieR: Automata, one is more difficult to discover than the other.

Taunting With A2

The game will explain the taunting mechanic to the player during Chapter 12: Memories of Sand upon taking control of A2. Unlike 2B and 9S, A2 is a rogue android who, as a result, features a unique set of skills and abilities, with taunting being one of her most iconic. The player must hold down the Light Attack button to make use of A2’s impressive taunt ability.

Taunting with A2 is much more impressive than taunting with 2B and 9S due to the confidence she exudes. Instead of letting her pod do all the work, she will perform a unique move and make a condescending remark to the enemies that stand before her. Her pose will vary depending on the weapon she wields, but each will ignite a rage in those who witness it and cause their heads to glow red while emitting steam. Once used, both A2’s and her opponent’s damage output will be raised by 180%.

Taunting With 2B & 9S

Though the means of taunting enemies during the first two playthroughs of NieR: Automata isn’t made clear, it is very easy to do. To taunt while playing as 2B and 9S, the player will need to obtain a Taunt Up support chip and equip it. It functions the same way as A2’s method, but it is far less flashy and arguably a bit mundane in comparison.

By mashing the L3 button, 2B and 9S will call upon their pods to taunt their enemies for them. Once activated, the pods will direct their attention to the nearest enemy and begin flashing lights in their direction. After enough flashes have been emitted, the enemy will react the same way as A2’s; their heads will glow and start emitting steam. The damage output of both the android and the enemy will be increased by 180% and can be further enhanced by equipping more Taunt Up plug-in chips.

NieR: Automata is available to play on the Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
