After meeting Ninjala’s eight protagonists, Kappei, Ron, Van, Lucy, Emma, Burton, Jane, and Berecca, players select one as a base for their avatar. Players can only choose one avatar per Ninjala account, but, they are then welcome to adjust nearly every feature to their own liking (within limits) - so yes, a player who starts off as the viral dancer, Emma, can easily re-dress their avatar as the quiet researcher, Ron.

Generally speaking, ninjas can access all avatar customization options from their “Closet,” which is accessible from their main menu, or “Base.” Once inside, players can modify their Battle Equipment, Avatar, Battle Emotes, Communication (those in-game emoji), and Favorites. Battle Emotes and Communication are fun extras, but players will spend most of their time swapping Battle Equipment and Avatar features. Battle Equipment allows players to equip and enhance the weapons they’ll use to score valuable Ippon, but ninjas hoping to change their character’s appearance should head on over to the Avatar option.

Once the Avatar menu opens up, players have the option of using their L/R bumpers to cycle between “Avatar Items” and “Customize”. Basically, “Customize” allows the player to adjust the avatar’s body itself (think voice, hair, skin color), while the Avatar Items consist of the ninja’s: Headgear, Facial Accessory, Costume, Background Music (BGM), and Gum Bottle. Ninjas can achieve countless combinations with these different avatar options (and even use Jala to buy more,) but fans of the OG eight can use strategic costuming to re-skin their avatars as a different protagonist.

Some of the options are named explicitly after their character (i.e. Ron’s Face, Van’s Attire), but others, like skin tone, are a bit less obvious - players are welcome to take advantage of this simple cheatsheet to easily dress up as their favorite WNA researcher/ninja.

Of course, players are welcome to mix and match these options (and more) to their hearts’ content, but those bubbly main-ninja designs are admittedly stylish. Regardless, given the less-savory additions like consumable cosmetics, players are thrilled to have such a wide palette at their disposal.
