The collectibility appeal of amiibo continues to stay at an all-time high. Consumers can’t get enough of the little figures and many shoppers are even willing to spend a ridiculous amount of money to track them down on the secondary market. With Sunday’s announcement that Nintendo plans to make an amiibo for all 51 Super Smash Bros. fighters, it seems like a safe bet that the company is doing everything it can to keep the amiibo cash cow going.
Today’s amiibo announcement is a surprise team up with Skylanders SuperChargers. A new wave of amiibo figures with have bases that allow them to function as both amiibo or Skylanders. Although Disney Infinity has made its way into the toys to life market as well, the team up of Skylanders and amiibo should be a huge win for both Nintendo and the Skylanders team.
The first two amiibo to make the jump to Skylanders will be Donkey Kong and Bowser. Both figures were revealed during the Nintendo presentation, along with their companion vehicles. Donkey Kong comes with a Barrel Blaster vehicle, while “Hammer Slam” Bowser has a Clown copter. To change the figures from amiibo to Skylanders mode, the user just needs to rotate the base.
Although Skylanders doesn’t have the same universal appeal that amiibo seem to have, this partnership may help take the game to the next level. It is very likely that many gamers who were previously uninterested in Skylanders will pick up the new game just so that they can see their new amiibo in action.
As any Nintendo fan would expect, these Skylanders figures will be exclusive to the Wii U.
Skylanders SuperChargers will arrive for Nintendo 3DS, Wii, Wii U, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and iPad on September 20, 2015.
