One of the most exciting third-party versions of the Game Boy is the upcoming Analogue Pocket, a system capable of playing Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advanced games on a 3.5-inch LCD screen, but the Analogue Pocket has been delayed because of tech problems. Still, anyone wanting to play Game Boy games on a more modern, backlit screen need look no further than the Nintendo DS Lite, and if they don’t want the top screen getting in the way they can simply remove it and turn the system into a single-screened Game Boy.

Instagram user krashovaride has done just that, but in customizing their build, things got a lot more steampunk. The DS Lite mod that requires taking the top screen away has been dubbed the “Game Boy Macro” (not to be confused with Nintendo’s official Game Boy Micro), and while most modders simply give their console a coat of paint, krashovaride went all out with gears, bolts, and a dusty bronze finish. Their take on the handheld console is painted so it looks to be made of aged, worn copper and covered in exposed, rusted gears implying the whole device works via some mechanical system like a wind-up watch.

In addition to the gears, krashovaride also added well-placed bolts and tubes to their design to really tie the aesthetic together. The custom Game Boy looks like some kind of device or weapon from the world of BioShock, a fact that is only amplified by the thick magnifying glass in front of the original screen.

The lensed contraption tints the DS Lite’s screen with a coke-bottle green, adding a perfect finishing touch to the steampunk look. Because of the layout of the DS, the whole thing most closely resembles the original Game Boy Advanced, but while the Game Boy Advanced just turned 20 years old, krashovaride’s take on the console makes it look closer to 200 years old.

The modder has also re-dressed an original late 80s Game Boy in the same steampunk style, and has an Instagram feed filled with pictures of other Game Boys done up in different styles. For the Sega enthusiasts, there are also modders out there making unique custom Game Gears.
