The development and release of Kirby and the Forgotten Land seems to be a long time coming. Though many of Nintendo’s more popular video game franchises such as Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda took precedence when it came to titular releases in the past years, launching the newest Kirby game in time for its 30th anniversary is likely a marketing strategy to draw in both old and new players into the series. Not only is it a great time to release the title due to the milestone celebration, but it also opens up a gateway for introducing other Kirby projects in the company’s pipeline.

On the official 2021 financial report of Nintendo, the company highlighted the launch of Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Alongside the mention of the game’s release on March 25, 2022, the company mentions that it has upcoming projects to celebrate Kirby’s 30th anniversary. No specific details about the anniversary activities were shared in the report. However, since Nintendo has been producing a lot of Kirby paraphernalia despite the absence of a game for modern platforms, Kirby products and merchandise are likely part of the birthday celebrations.

The report also states that the 30th anniversary projects will still be in collaboration with Kirby series developer HAL Laboratory. This may be an indication that the team is already working on another video game, and just timing the announcement with specific dates in 2022. Though many in the community are hopeful that remasters of the older Kirby games will be produced, another new title would likely still be well-received by longtime fans and players.

Until solid information is shared by Nintendo, fans will have to resort to keeping updated on the official Kirby channels. Though Nintendo did publish a dedicated microsite for the 30th anniversary, it remains empty, save for links to Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Hopefully more news will be shared by the devs once the Switch title successfully launches this March 25, 2022.
