In a statement given to IGN, Nintendo clarified that Fakesch was misquoted in regards to the release window for Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U and that the original article has since been changed to correlate with the previous confirmation of an unspecified 2014 release.
This news shouldn’t come as much of a surprise for gamers who’ve been eagerly awaiting the latest Smash game, as development between each iteration usually takes a significant amount of time. More importantly, the initial statement from Fakesch mentioned that Mario Kart 8 would also be hitting in Spring 2014, and Nintendo didn’t even mention the game in this statement — lending credence to the title’s rumored April launch.
It’s not hard to see Super Smash Bros. for Wii U launching in late Fall or early Winter, and it’s entirely possible that delays could push it even further back than that. With updates arriving daily from the official Smash Bros. website, there’s still more than enough new information that fans have to look forward to in the coming months.
The latest character update confirmed Fire Emblem’s Marth for the crossover-centric beat ’em up back in November. With the continuous trend of announcing a returning fighter each month in mind, another veteran (or maybe even a newcomer) should be making their presence known at some point in December.
