Here’s what Reggie Fils-Aime said about the Nintendo Switch during his interview:
Fils-Aime goes on to reference the success of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which by all accounts has an attach rate near one to one with Nintendo Switch purchases. He also notes its extremely high ratings with industry critics.
The Nintendo Switch’s early success is undeniable. The new console has been sold out at retailers across the United States since its launch on March 3 and will likely continue to be so for the foreseeable future. An analyst’s report prior to the Switch’s launch estimated 5 million consoles sold in in 2017. Nintendo’s estimates report at least 2 million sold in March alone. Meanwhile, Nintendo was so impressed by the Switch’s launch sales that they increased production of the console by two, from 8 million to 16 million, for fiscal year 2017.
By March 2018 there will be more Nintendo Switch platforms available than the Wii U has sold in its lifespan, with just 14 million shipped as of December 2016. It shows that Nintendo is willing to invest in the potential success of the Nintendo Switch and not just talk about it, that’s for sure. Keep in mind that even the Wii U performed well in its first months, selling almost 4 million in its launch month – more than the Switch, Wii, PlayStation, or Xbox One. One month isn’t enough to measure a console’s success, but Nintendo’s off to a great start with the Switch.
The Nintendo Switch is currently available for $299, though it’s in short supply.
